  • Edge-Level Bot Management: Tools like Cloudflare Bot Management can help screen traffic before it hits your site. This means known bots, bad IP ranges, and suspicious user agents can be blocked or challenged before they even load your landing page.
  • On-Site Form Protection: This is very important. Add invisible honeypot fields, reCAPTCHA v3, and server-side form validation. There still may be a good reason to use conditional logic to block form entries. For example, you can block form submissions for entries with an out-of-area zip code. Additionally, review which forms get the most bot submissions and decide if you want to approach that one differently. For example, we see many bots fill out any form on a page with the /contact or /contact-us URL. We often pull that from the conversion tracking entirely to remove the chance Google Ads from marking that as a conversion.
  • IP Blocking and Exclusions: Use Google Ads’ IP exclusion tool to filter out problematic sources. Combine this with GA4 or server logs to identify patterns of fraudulent clicks over time. 
  • Click Fraud Tools: Consider using third-party tools like ClickCease, CHEQ Essentials, or Lunio (formerly PPC Protect). These services monitor behavior across sessions and flag click patterns that suggest non-human behavior—such as repeated fast clicks, impossible time-on-site durations, or high bounce rates from bot-heavy ISPs.
  • Conversion Hygiene: Just because someone filled a form doesn’t mean they’re real. Use email verification, phone validation, lead scoring, and behavioral tagging to filter garbage before sending anything to your sales team or CRM. And when importing conversions back into Google for smart bidding, make sure you’re only feeding verified, qualified data.

You will want to minimize as much bot traffic from triggering conversions as possible because for conversion-based smart bidding campaigns, those conversions will influence how the campaign will spend its budget and you’ll want to make sure it isn’t optimizing for bots, further contributing to bot traffic.
